May 22nd, 2009IP addresses
January 21st, 2009IP or Internet Protocol addresses are numerical values assigned to computers in an network which use the internet protocol for communication between devices. Originally the IP address was defined as a 32 bit number and this naming convention called IPV4 is still widely used today. With the growth of the internet, the available IP addresses under IPV4 have been used up quickly, as a result of which a new addressing system IPV6 has been developed. This IP addressing system uses 128 bits for each address on the internet.
The IP allocation worldwide is managed by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) . The IANA coordinates with the the five geographically distributed Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) to allocate IP address blocks according to the requirements of a particular region. This depends to a large extent on the internet usage in the region, and the RIRs co-ordinate with the Internet Service Providers , Web hosting companies and other entities who need IP addresses.
